TAMPA – Boxing is alive and well, at least in this Bay area city. The debut of FightNight Productions went off without a hitch and it wowed a sellout crowd who saw a tremendous night of boxing at the A La Carte Pavilion.
In the main event Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry scored a first round technical knockout over Hevinson Herrera at 1:49 in the first of a scheduled eight rounder in the finale of a seven bout card.
Cherry (26-6-2, 14 KO) wasted no time in attacking his opponent and pummeled Herrera (14-5-1, 9 KO) throughout before referee Max Parker Jr. stepped in to call a halt to the action.
The Wauchula resident, by way of the Bahamas, recorded his second straight victory after a 15-month layoff following a unanimous decision loss to Timothy Bradley for the WBC light welterweight belt in September 2008. Each of Cherry’s losses have come via decisions and he has never been knocked out.
